 Scoliosis - Minimally Invasive Surgery

Recent advances in surgery has allowed surgeons to use minimally invasive techniques to perform scoliosis surgery. The current technique is called 'VATS' - video assisted thoracoscopic surgery. A thoracoscope is used in combination with incisions of two - four inches or less to perform spinal fusion. This technique is more suitable for younger patients with more flexible curves that generally measure less than 90 degrees. The following pictures illustrate actual thoracoscopic surgery performed by me at New York University.
