Muscular Dystrophy

Patients with muscular dystrophy develop scoliosis from the generalized muscle weakness. Left untreated, the scoliosis can eventually compromise respiratory function. Surgical correction and fusion improves respiratory function and sitting balance, allowing the arms to be freed from balancing the patient. This allows the patient to use the upper extremities for mobility rather than support.
